The Brecon

A Timeless Retreat.

Dapper residents-only clubhouse demure paired with a stylish friend's alpine den informs the design language at The Brecon in Adelboden, Switzerland. All brand touch-points, from the identity through to the colour and materials palette, signage, staff uniforms and the interiors by Amsterdam-based Nicemakers, marry contemporary elegance with mid-century nostalgia.

Brief

We were tasked with creating a contemporary brand identity that tipped its hat to the previous hotel that occupied the site – the Huldi Waldhaus – which was Adelboden's hip hangout du jour in the 60's and 70's.

Approach

We were inspired by the traditional blackletter carvings that adorn many buildings in the Bernese Oberland and set about bringing these bang up to date. The 'B' marque appears across myriad brand touchpoints (both as a single letter and repeat pattern) and is paired with a condensed slab serif typeface that evokes the glamour and style of the property's predecessor. The earthy colour palette informs the choice of natural materials such as linen, leather, cotton, and the handcrafted double cloth weaves from our long term collaborators, Pembokeshire based weavers Melin Tregwynt.

Result

Since its revolving door spun open The Brecon has courted global attention and acclaim with extensive coverage from the likes of Monocle, American and UK Vogue, The Aficionados, Dezeen, Wallpaper, Konfekt and NZZ. However we think Condé Nast Traveller nailed it with 'Switzerland’s most stylish hotel opening of 2024 is something to yodel about’!
